Build and test a multilingual survey
Distinguish manually authored translations, participant language preferences, and optional automatic translation.
Screenshots from the original Surveylet guide illustrate the controls below. Layouts and labels may vary with your survey configuration. Select an image or “View full size” to open it in a new tab.
Design languages and participant languages
Survey Design Languages determines the languages available in the question editor. Select the intended language before editing question text and labels. A user’s language preference and the language of an invitation are related settings, but do not themselves create translated questionnaire content.
- Add the intended design languages in Survey Settings.
- Enter and review the questionnaire text in each supported design language.
- Set participant language preferences and prepare the corresponding invitation templates.
- Check button labels, scale anchors, help text, consent, and closing instructions.
- Test the full journey, including characters in email subjects and exports.

Automatic translation is a separate choice
Where enabled for your account, Google Translate can display survey content and comments in additional languages. It is different from a translation reviewed and entered by your study team. Confirm that using the service is permitted for your project and that the resulting wording is suitable.
If your organization requires third-party translation to be disabled, contact Calibrum to confirm the account configuration before launch. Manually entered translations can be used without relying on automatic translation.

Protect existing translations
Removing a design language deletes the stored questionnaire translation for that language. Adding the language back does not restore the deleted text. Export or keep a copy before removing a language.
For a language or character set you have not used before, confirm support with Calibrum and test the editor, runtime controls, charts, email, and exports. Do not assume every translation language works as a manually authored design language.
